Gift Cards...All's Well That Ends WellAre you concerned about rising health care costs? In a 2004 survey by SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management), human resource professionals ranked the rise in heath care costs as their top economic concern. Likewise, employees rank health care benefits as their most important benefit and the AFL-CIO lists it as one of the most common key issues in union bargaining. Do you see a conflict arising here? More and more organizations are now offering company-sponsored wellness programs to encourage employees to make healthy lifestyle choices. The same SHRM survey identified Preventive Health Care programs as the number-one way organizations are dealing with health care cost increases. In fact, 56% of the respondents said they offered such programs. But, as we all know, simply making a program available does not necessarily guarantee participation. Typically, enrollment in such programs beyond the initial assessment often runs between 9%- 20%. A good start, but certainly not high enough to have a significant impact on costs. The answer, MOTIVATE THEM! In 2003 IBM instituted a program to reward employees who maintain a frequent exercise regimen or stop smoking. Enrollment jumped to 80%. Creating an effective gift card-based program to reward consistent participation is relatively easy:
A well chosen array of gift cards from high quality, convenient merchants can add more clout to your program, help you create happier employees, and potentially lower your healthcare costs. |
